The position
We are seeking a Principal Scientist – Computational Cancer Biology to join our team in Vienna, Austria. As part of our growing Computational Innovation (@computationalinnovation) function, you will join a global, multicultural, and open‑minded team driving digital innovation and cutting‑edge computational science. In this role, you will drive innovation in computational oncology by advancing mechanism‑of‑action insights, refining patient segmentation through biomarkers and generating drug‑resistance hypotheses. You will collaborate closely with cross‑disciplinary research, AI/ML, and data engineering teams to analyze large‑scale pre‑clinical and clinicogenomic datasets.
Tasks & responsibilities
- Propose, design, and execute analyses on integrated genomic, transcriptomic, imaging, and clinical data to derive actionable insights for drug mode‑of‑action understanding, disease biology, biomarker-driven patient selection, resistance mechanisms and rational drug combination hypothesis.
- Partner with cross‑functional internal teams and drive external collaborations, identifying and translating knowledge gaps into key questions and technical requirements for well‑scoped analytical plans.
- Demonstrate strong project‑level leadership and proactively drive computational work streams across oncology programs in a dependable and time‑effective manner; provide mentorship to junior scientists and ensure excellence in execution, documentation and delivery.
- Communicate methods and results to both technical and non‑technical stakeholders, presenting scientific insights and proposed strategies in relevant portfolio meetings.
- Evaluate, adapt and implement new analysis methods grounded in best computational practices and an applied AI/ML toolbox, contributing to reusable data and code alongside AI/ML, genetics and data science/engineering teams.
Requirements
- Advanced degree (Ph.D. or equivalent) in computational biology, biology, medicine or another relevant life‑science field, combined with 2+ years of industry or postdoctoral experience in oncology or cancer biology.
- Strong foundation in modern computational data analysis methods and familiarity with oncology‑related public datasets.
- Demonstrated ability to work with real‑world patient data, epidemiological datasets and multi‑omics data in research or pre‑clinical settings.
- Proficiency in R and/or Python, including experience with widely used computational biology and scientific computing libraries.
- Excellent critical thinking, with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively, to communicate complex technical content to multidisciplinary teams.
