Responsibilities:

BI has set the strategic goal of building 30% of the OneHP pipeline based on external innovation. A constant flow of a 20% of new pipeline entries on an annual basis is envisaged to come from external opportunities. Such external projects add directly to BI’s portfolio or pipeline. An external opportunity may add a new set of compounds at preclinical or clinical stage as well as a product in registration or launch. It is of utmost importance to assess the quality of such investment opportunities in a timely manner under high pressure, define a global development plan and prepare clear recommendations for decision making by senior management. Within BI this process is called ‘in depth evaluation (IDE)’. 
The purpose of the IDE Lead is to lead in-depth evaluations (IDEs) for Boehringer Ingelheim across therapeutic areas for SOD-stage and beyond NMEs, ATMPs and Digital Therapeutics.
The IDE Lead drives a highly complex, large cross-functional team of functional experts and TA-experts in a matrix setting to efficiently evaluate projects across Human Pharma (I.e. both for the Innovation Unit (IU) and the Business Unit (BU) and makes strategic recommendations for Go/No-Go decisions to decision bodies / ordering parties (e.g.IUPC/IUEC).  These decisions encompass long term contractual obligations including multi million Euro payment obligations to the partner and internal investments at corresponding scale. Execution in extremely short time periods is business critical to cope with the highly competitive environment. As such the role is a key critical driver of success for accessing external innovation and thus critically contributes to BI’s strategic goals.

The IDE Lead establishes necessary processes / operational setup for timely review and compliant handling of shared information / documentation and reinforce a culture/mindset where external parties and their properties are being treated with utmost care and highest confidentiality. 
The IDE Lead is the single point of contact for ordering party, negotiation team and future potential alliance manager and ensures a smooth transition to future BI asset team. 
The IDE Lead supports establishing BI as “partner of choice” by giving an open and positive impression to the potential partner and treating partner’s materials and information with respect and integrity.

Overall accountable for internal process, timeline, delivery of evaluation outcome and process champion for data review, documentation, and communication with partner etc.

Accountable for technical evaluation and identified project risks incl. mitigation options. This requires driving complex and highly business relevant results within an extremely short timeline.

Together with TA-experts team (i.e. representatives of the therapeutic area like BD&L SP, medicine, research, marketing, etc.) responsible for Core TPP / TPP, project plan and commercial assessment as a basis for overall assessment and recommendation for decision making to senior executives. This demands excellent leadership skills to form a highly performance team to deliver results on extremely complex topics within a very short timeframe.

Accountable for providing economic evaluation of an asset (as applicable) – asset view (without financial terms) which are basis for business critical decision making. These decisions encompass long term contractual obligations including multi million Euro payment obligations to the partner and internal investments at corresponding scale.

Accountable for project transition to BI as applicable, e.g. study sponsorship, tox studies, CMC development incl. transition of work packages to BI. The flawless execution of these transition activities is a critical factor for short time-to-launch

Accountable for wind-down activities / destruction of material in case of No Go decision. Execution is critical to fulfill contractual obligations mitigating liability risks.

Requirements:

Requires in-depth knowledge in the pharmaceutical industry, advanced scientific degree (Ph.D. or MD, or MS) with a long-term of experience in the pharmaceutical or biotech industry, ideally with several years of experience in project management. Requires successful track-record in project management.

- Demonstrated experience in leading matrix teams to achieve results.  Proven ability to prioritize and handle large number of responsibilities without compromising delivery quality or timelines. Excellent written and verbal communication, in particular an ability to deliver high quality summaries and presentations.
- Very Strong project management skills, as well as analytical thinking and attention to detail
- Excellent communication skills in English language
- Experience with preclinical research/clinical research and with preclinical development
- Excellent crisis management skills and solution orientation is essential

- Strong communication and organizational skills, as well as good intercultural skills 
- Pro-active style, can-do attitude
- Ability to work in matrix organization
- High energy level, questioning and challenging mindset, capable of distilling large data sets quickly to make recommendation regarding investments.
