Senior Scientist: Protein Engineer, Biotherapeutics

Boehringer Ingelheim is currently seeking a talented and innovative Senior Scientist to support our growing biologics portfolio in Ridgefield, CT. This individual will be an integral member of the Protein Engineering Group and participate in efforts to identify fit for purpose multi-specific biologics and engineer therapeutic proteins for clinical readiness. They will make contributions to the generation of first-in-class therapeutics based on an understanding of the NBE process and target biology. The candidate will act as a subject matter expert in protein engineering and help to drive internal capabilities towards an industry leading position. They will be expected to help build a culture of excellence through successful project outcomes, advancement of scientific understanding, empowerment of staff and increased connection with the field through an external publication record and collaborative interactions within the industry.

Duties & Responsibilities

•    Plans and executes fit for purpose protein engineering campaigns leading to impactful pharmaceutical candidates.
•    Builds a deep knowledge of the field of multi-specifics and acts as a subject matter expert to therapeutic area programs.
•    Ideates and realizes novel solutions for real world drug discovery hurdles to project teams in support of our first-in-class pipeline vision.
•    Engineers’ proteins wholistically for properties such as function, stability, solubility, and immunogenicity through a combination of in-silico and wet-lab techniques. 
•    Is familiar with advanced theory and current developments in the field of protein engineering and makes recommendations to management regarding the advancement of capabilities. 
•    Creates a culture of excellence through continual process improvement, scientific curiosity and empowerment. Develops and maintains outside visibility.
•    Demonstrates independent thinking, e.g. by proposing and implementing new experimental designs and concepts that contribute to research goals and reflect expert knowledge; Identifies potential patentable inventions.
•    Demonstrates clear understanding of research team goals and works effectively toward achieving them; Has ability to participate as co-leader or representative on multiple project teams and contribute to defining expertise-related aspects of overall program goals.
•    Mentors and develops scientific staff; oversees experimental design and results of technicians and junior level scientists. 
•    Complies with all applicable regulations; Ensures that work performed in area of responsibility is conducted in a safe and compliant manner; Maintains proper records in accordance with SOPs and policies.
•    Prepares clear technical reports, publications and oral presentations. Independently communicates results in the form of reports and or presentations; Presents responsibly and defends own work at scientific meetings; May deliver project updates to senior level management.
•    Contributes to departmental administration; Demonstrates fiscal responsibility with respect to cost of experiments, technology, external collaborations, and travel.

Requirements

•    PhD is required in related field or equivalent, and a demonstrated record of success in a directly related field.
•    Requires an advanced knowledge of technologies employed in the role such as molecular design, molecular biology, protein expression and purification, analytical biophysics of proteins, or assays of protein function and quality.
•    Experience with the utilization of computational design and cutting-edge software is preferred, as demonstrated by a track record of successful outcomes and understanding of key considerations shaping the scientific landscape.
•    Computational skills including fluency in python, experience with scikit learn pytorch, or similar ML package implementations is nice to have
•    Requires project management ability and excellent written and oral presentation skills.

•    Needs experience in one or more of the skills listed above, along with knowledge of the skill center process and the ability to apply those skills to the process. 

 

Eligibility Requirements:

Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without restriction.
Must be willing to take a drug test and post-offer physical (if required)
Must be 18 years of age or older
 

Compensation Data

This position offers a base salary typically between $140,000 and $222,000.  The position may be eligible for a role specific variable or performance-based bonus and or other compensation elements.  For an overview of our benefits please click here.
