Senior Principal Scientist, Immuno-Oncology

Boehringer Ingelheim is seeking a highly motivated Senior Principal Scientist as a key member of the Immuno-Oncology focused Oncology Research Department in Ridgefield, CT. The successful candidate will manage and prioritize multiple research projects, propose and implement new R&D activities and/or technology goals, supervise reports to plan and conduct laboratory experiments, and evaluate, interpret and present data to executive and senior management. The qualified individual is also responsible for the management and development of scientific staff.

Duties & Responsibilities
- Leads multidisciplinary discovery teams with accountability for advancing projects from scientific concept through candidate selection, partnering closely with molecule makers, pharmacology, safety, translational, and development functions to shape strategy, resolve key risks, and deliver differentiated therapeutic candidates.
- Directs and oversees experimental design and results of junior staff, manages ongoing pipeline projects to achieve milestones in a timely manner
- Proposes new therapeutic concepts, leads target identification, validation, biology elucidation, biomarker discovery and implementation, and drug candidate selection
- Demonstrates strong leadership in project teams AND / OR acts as a representative on multiple project teams and contributes to core group/research goals and provides expert knowledge
- Works closely with Oncology Res colleagues locally and globally, as well as different functions across Boehringer to execute strategies and deliver on shared goals
- Independently communicates results by preparing clear technical reports, publications, and oral presentations; effectively delivers updates to senior management in context of overall project goals
- Functions as a subject matter expert and technical leader within and beyond Oncology Res in a project-relevant area OR technology; provides guidance and expertise to advance specific R&D projects OR evaluates and proposes new technologies and concepts, in support of the advancement of multiple R&D projects
- Demonstrates broad and deep knowledge in the field of expertise, stays on top of the current literature and applies learnings to relevant R&D projects; complies with all applicable regulations; ensures that work performed in area of responsibility is conducted in a safe and compliant manner; maintains proper records in accordance with SOPs and policies
- Provides administration within area of responsibility including recruiting, managing, mentoring and developing scientific staff; provides assistance in the preparation and management of operating and capital equipment budgets, as required
Requirements
- Ph.D., D.V.M./V.M.D., or equivalent in a relevant scientific discipline with seven-plus (7+) years of experience.
- At least five (5) years of industry experience in the field of immuno-oncology is preferred
- Experience in Immunology and extensive experience in myeloid or T cell biology-focused research is preferred. Candidates of strong tumor biology background with good knowledge and skillsets in immunology will be considered.
- Previous lab management and strong people leadership skills are required; supervision of PhD level scientist(s) in industry settings is highly preferred
- Experience in moving project transition from early stages to late stages, including pre-IND as a must (either small molecules or biologics).
- Deep familiarity with the process of therapeutic small molecules and / or biologics discovery is desirable
- Extensive, creative AND hands-on experience of in vitro human / murine primary cell-based assay development and readouts
- Advanced knowledge and hands-on experience with high-dimensional flow cytometry and relevant analytic tools
- A strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals in the area of immunology or cancer immunology
- Broad knowledge of scientific advancement and industrial trends related to immuno-oncology
- The ability and willingness to work with global colleagues effectively in a highly diverse and collaborative research environment, including occasional travel to global research sites
- Appropriate level of understanding of applicable regulations
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Physical capability to perform lab duties (e.g., lifting, standing, PPE usage) where applicable.
- May require an ability to push, pull, lift and carry objects up to 50lbs.

- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without restriction.
- Must be willing to take a drug test and post-offer physical (if required).
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
Compensation Data
The base salary range for Senior Principal Scientist is $166,600.00 to $250,000.00. The position may be eligible for a role specific discretionary bonus, relocation, and/or other compensation elements. We continuously review market data and may adjust salary ranges as needed in the future.
