The Director, Internal Consulting serves as a strategic advisor and an internal consultant to manage and lead large-scale, highly complex, strategic, innovative, transformational, and performance enhancement programs and projects across multiple functional areas.

The Director, Internal Consulting serves as a trusted advisor and sparring partner for members of HPLT, CMC, and other senior leaders, to advise on solutions to critical business problems and propose strategic options that influence the strategic direction of the company and various Business Units. The incumbent will provide state-of-the-art strategic management consulting end-to-end, thereby co-developing and defining strategies, priorities, and solutions to critical business challenges for Boehringer.
The Director, Internal Consulting will leverage the Strategy and Internal Consulting team's unique position, contribute to shaping Boehringer's future by identify and proactively proposing strategic initiatives to stay ahead of emerging threats, capitalize on opportunities, and/or future-proof Boehringer's HP operating model and strategies.
The Director, Internal Consulting will effectively scope and plan project opportunities; effectively manage assigned projects to ensure successful completion that drives business impact. This may include formal management of other team member(s) and/or management of project team member(s). This position may have direct reports.
This role is based on-site at our Ridgefield, CT location with hybrid flexibility of 2-3 days per week on-site.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Leverages consulting best practices, lead strategic projects or programs for executive sponsors and at the specific request of the CMD.
- Strongly influences the strategic direction of the project, presents recommendations to senior leadership / CMC / HPLT.
- Contributes to and influences senior management decision making.
- Coordinates and liaises with multiple functional areas.
- Ensures that team has all relevant stakeholder contexts.
- Uses excellent business judgment and political sensitivity to develop recommendations.
- When required, builds Business Cases in collaboration with Business partners to support executive decision-making.
- Drives and moderates decision making on Boehringer executive level by supporting the CMC/HPLT in the strategic review of the emerging business opportunities and proposing strategic options.
- Brings outside-in perspectives on overall strategy and strategic projects, challenges status, internal assumptions and processes, always with a collaborative and result-oriented mindset.
- Oversees strategic management consulting together with Stakeholder and Sponsor management along all project stages and ensures full alignment between ongoing strategic management consulting projects and the overall US priorities.
- Drives and moderates decision making on BI Executive level by supporting CMC & HPLT in the strategic review of the emerging business opportunities and proposing strategic options.
- Cultivates a pipeline of prioritized projects that are aligned to the CMC and HPLT priorities by serving as a trusted liaison to senior leaders and partnering to identify future needs.
- Scope individual engagements by defining objectives, required deliverables, resource needs, timelines, and budgets, as appropriate.
- Contributes to prioritization and resourcing decisions for proposed projects ensuring strategic relevance for Boehringer and alignment with US business priorities.
- Serves as a resource to guide business sponsors to appropriate external support, when required.
- Co-defines and implements strategic goals and priorities for Strategy and Internal Consulting.
- Leads one or more initiatives related to developing and maintaining processes, methodologies, and best practices for an industry leading internal consulting organization, if required; raise the bar of the team by coaching and mentoring junior staff.
- Monitors trends in the US healthcare ecosystem that could affect and transform the traditional pharmaceutical business model.
- Develops internal perspectives / recommendations (e.g. as part of an Internal Consulting white paper).
- Connects-the-dots across the US HP organization and business functions, be a driving force of cross-functional collaboration in the Company on establishing and evaluating strategic options, act as a source of strategic projects and growth initiatives that create synergies and add value to Boehringer.
- Ensures that new projects leverage expertise from legacy projects with similar scope / objectives.
- May supervise other team members and/or stakeholders and will need to set appropriate job expectations, provide regular feedback, conduct timely MAG Plan reviews, identify performance challenges, create action plans and monitor the effectiveness of those action plans.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree required; MBA preferred.
- Ten plus (10+) years progressive experience in business, leadership, or strategic roles in US Pharma, healthcare, or other related industry.
- Extensive (5+) experience successfully managing large scale projects in a corporate setting required.
- Management consulting experience preferred.
- Experience managing different methodologies e.g. Waterfall, Agile, Lean required.
- Well-developed leadership skills.
- Well-developed strategic thinking and problem-solving skills.
- Demonstrated ability to manage budgets and resources.
- Demonstrated ability to achieve results in a highly matrixed organization.
- People management experience preferred.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency in MS Office required; including demonstrated ability to build high-impact PowerPoint slides.
- Ability to travel (may include overnight travel).

- Must be willing to take a drug test and post-offer physical (if required).
