University Intern - Environment Health & Safety

This is a 12-month paid internship starting September 2026. This role is fully site based requiring 5 days a week in Pirbright.

 

Salary: £26,000 per annum

At Pirbright, the EHS team works with colleagues across the site and occasionally the UK and Ireland region to advise and support them to work safe, stay healthy and look after the environment from the activities they are conducting, whilst ensuring compliance with UK legislation and corporate requirements.

Every day is different for the team and there will be opportunities to learn new skill sets to support different aspects of environment, health and safety management which include the softer personnel skills required to influence and roll out the management systems.

TASKS & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support the EHS team with the environment management programmes including waste management and trade effluent
  • Support the Site’s Be Green team to implement and educate colleagues regarding green behaviour initiatives
  • Support the Site’s sustainability initiatives such as zero waste to landfill and water stewardship
  • Support the EHS team to conduct EHS inspections and topic specific audits in departments across site
  • Support the Site’s ongoing safety programmes, including incident investigation
  • Support the EHS and Biosafety teams with campaigns and educational training
  • Support wellbeing activities across UK&IRE

REQUIREMENTS

  • Applicants will be studying for a BSc in Environmental Sciences, BSc in Environment and Sustainability, BSc in Safety, Health and Environment Management or BSc in Occupational Safety and Health Management or a similar degree.
  • 3 A levels at grade ABB (minimum) with at least one grade coming from a science subject.
  • Applicants must have the ability for independent travel to work and other sites.
  • Applicants must have the right to work in the UK.

KEY COMPENTENCIES

  • Strong verbal communication skills within a business environment, able to speak clearly and fluently, expressing opinions information, and key points of an argument with clarity and simplicity.
  • Strong written communication skills, able to write clearly, succinctly and correctly, writes convincingly in an engaging, structured and logical manner, avoiding unnecessary use of jargon or complicated language.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office essential with the ability to adapt knowledge to use Boehringer’s local systems/platforms/technology.
  • Sets clear objectives, plans activities well in advance, manages time effectively, identifying and organising resources needed to accomplish tasks, monitoring performance against deadlines.
  • Able to work as team member, establishing good working relationships, adapting to the team as required; also, able to work as an individual contributor with minimal supervision. Must be highly motivated and have the ability to deliver both within a team environment and independently.
  • Follows instructions from others without unnecessarily challenging authority. Follows procedures and policies, keeping to schedules but remains flexible to changing priorities.
  • Professional approach to work that upholds Boehringer’s values and behaviours and complies with all legal obligations and HSE compliance requirements.

FUNCTIONAL COMPENTENCIES

  • Awareness of safety documentation, or experience writing risk assessments (desirable)
  • Experience running or publishing an event or campaign (desirable)
