Senior Scientist Packaging (m/w/d)

The Position

As the “go-to” scientific expert for MSAT and Global Supply leadership, you will play a key role in ensuring excellence in BIAH packaging and delivery systems and packaging processes throughout the product and process lifecycle, while contributing to new and complex product developments in Global Innovation AH. Building on your expertise, you will maintain a strong knowledge of both primary packaging and medical devices, and you will actively scout innovative packaging and delivery systems technology solutions to drive future manufacturing platforms. Located at Boehringer Ingelheim’s headquarters in Germany, you will collaborate closely with cross-functional Global Innovation research and development teams as well as Human Pharma partners to shape the future of animal health innovation.

This position has a hybrid setup with approximately 2 days per week on site.

Tasks & responsibilities

• Integrated into the packaging and delivery systems international department, you will manage the local team of packaging scientists and technical experts (5 employees) you will report to the Head of MSAT Packaging and delivery systems.
• As an expert in Packaging sciences, you take the lead on scientific strategic projects on Packaging and delivery systems development using Quality by Design principles, on technical transfers, changes and troubleshooting, for new development and lifecycle products.
• As a project leader, contributor, or investigator, you will execute independent scientific deliverables and drive cross-functional, multi-site teams.
• Driving innovation, you will lead development strategies for new processes and optimizations, integrating robust packaging and delivery systems that bring clear business advantages.
• Taking ownership of project success, you will plan responsibilities, lead scientific strategies and execution, and provide mentorship to junior talent within the MSAT and site network.
• To support regulatory processes, you will provide the packaging and delivery system elements and justifications to support new product submissions, resolve packaging issues arising from inspections, and guide responses to Regulatory Authorities on product registrations, geographical expansions, and post-approval changes.
• With strong communication skills, you will prepare and present progress updates to MSAT and Global Supply leadership, analyze complex data, and document findings through detailed protocols, reports, and presentations.
• By building external partnerships, you will maintain a strong network with packaging and delivery systems experts, you will collaborate closely transversal functions (Global Innovation, BIAH sites and CMOs, QA, Sourcing, Global strategy, Launch & Transfer, Global Strategic Marketing, …)

Requirements

• Ph.D. in scientific discipline (Pharmacy, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biological sciences preferred) with several years direct industry experience OR Masters degree in scientific discipline (Pharmacy, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biological sciences preferred) with long term industry experience
• Strong scientific knowledge of complex primary packaging and medical devices
• Good leadership skills to build and work across a global network to achieve results
• Strong expertise in troubleshooting packaging and delivery systems problems and root cause analysis of manufacturing issues
• Design and supervise studies that generate data required for packaging and delivery systems development, to identify and document problems, to provide solutions
• Demonstrated leadership and influence through communication and the ability to perform in a diverse environment within and across organizations
• Fluency in English required – additional language skills are an asset
• Willingness to travel internationally
