Head of Medical Affairs Pipeline Obesity & Liver

The Position

As the Head of Pipeline Medical Affairs, you will play a pivotal role in driving the vision and strategy for a distinct group of assets and indications within the newly formed Therapeutic Area Obesity & Liver Health (TA OL). Reporting directly to the Head of TA OL, you will lead the design and execution of competitive medical affairs strategies, ensuring alignment with overall asset and portfolio goals.

In this influential leadership position, you will guide and inspire a diverse team of experts—including Therapeutic Area Leads and specialists in Real-World Evidence, Scientific Relations, and Medical Affairs—to deliver impactful outcomes. By fostering cross-functional collaboration with Market Access and Commercial teams, you will help shape market development plans and ensure our strategies remain at the forefront of the rapidly evolving healthcare landscape.

Tasks & responsibilities

  • Drive medical, clinical, scientific, and strategic leadership by defining clear medical affairs goals for brands and indications, ensuring alignment with asset and portfolio objectives while contributing to the development of clinical Target Product Profiles (cTPPs) and indication strategies.
  • Inspire and manage a team of medical affairs experts, setting priorities, allocating resources, and fostering professional growth through onboarding, performance assessments, and personalized development plans.
  • Collaborate with asset teams to deliver core milestones, including market development plans, indication strategies, and evidence generation initiatives, while ensuring alignment with US stakeholder needs and external requirements.
  • Champion cross-therapeutic area medical affairs projects, leveraging industry-leading scientific knowledge and best practices to drive impactful initiatives across multiple assets.
  • Represent therapeutic area medical affairs in steering committees and act as the key global contact for regional teams, in particular focus / priority markets, ensuring seamless collaboration with external partners.
  • Foster and role model collaboration with HP Medicine (including Clinical Development), Brand Heads and Medical Affairs Leads/teams, Commercial Pipeline Head/teams to ensure maximization of the clinical and commercial potential of our early and late pipeline brands. Requirements

  • Advanced degree in life sciences (MD, PhD or PharmD), ideally specialized in the therapeutic area, combined with extensive experience in Medical Affairs, strategic leadership, and evidence generation across global markets, including the US, China, Japan, and Germany
  • Experience in obesity / liver health and/or consumer-focused therapeutic areas strongly preferred.
  • A proven track record of medical and scientific excellence within the pharmaceutical or related industries, complemented by long-term experience of strategic leadership at both international and country levels, with a preference for US market exposure
  • Drive success in clinical research (Phases 2–4, submission) and product launches or registrations in the US and Europe, while aligning medical affairs strategies across diverse markets
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to co-develop competitive medical affairs strategies, market development plans, and evidence generation initiatives, partnering with healthcare systems to deliver impactful results
  • Demonstrate exceptional leadership and mentoring abilities, managing complex projects and fostering collaboration with global matrix teams, external experts, patient advocacy groups, and international societies
  • Excel in communication, negotiation, and influencing skills, with a confident presence, situational responsiveness, and the ability to lead through ambiguity and change.
  • Bring advanced management and leadership capabilities, a commitment to continuous learning, and fluency in English to thrive in a dynamic, matrix-driven environment
