Specialist, EHS

Description

The purpose of this role is to support the daily operational and implementation needs of the EHS program at the Gainsville site. This role will perform duties primarily related to the site environmental program, with specific responsibility for waste management. This role will maintain limited responsibility in safety and industrial hygiene programs, will be performed according to federal and state regulatory requirements as well as the BI programs BE SAFE and BE GREEN. In coordination with the EHS Manager, this role will coordinate with in-house customers and outside vendors for the management of all classifications of waste, while developing skills in other areas. Duties & Responsibilities

  • Manages the solid and hazardous waste program and federal regulations, including collection, classification, profiling, storage, preparation for shipment and associated paperwork.
  • Identifies and implements process improvements for cost reduction and compliance in site waste management. This can include writing procedures and performing employee training.
  • Conducts inspections/audits of contracted work, laboratories, waste management areas, and process and maintenance areas for compliance with regulatory and internal requirements, with a particular focus on waste costs.
  • Participates in the site EHS Committee, Medical Emergency Response Team, and Incident Response Team.
  • Partners with employees at all levels across all departments to ensure successful EHS programs in their area.
  • Supports department leadership in measuring success.
  • Keeps up to date with relevant federal, state and company requirements, while managing change in a fast-paced environment that includes vaccine production, commercial operations and Research and Development.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Bachelor's degree in Environment, Safety or Industrial Hygiene, or a Science or Engineering discipline is preferred.
  • A certification in E, H or S, or ability to obtain within 1 year of hire.
  • A minimum of 2 years experience in Environment, Health or Safety.
  • Experience in interpreting regulatory requirements and building associated programs.
  • Skilled in working cooperatively with and influencing people that report to others.
  • Ability to work independently and multitask.
  • Material handling skills are desired.
  • Familiarity with a broad range of Environmental Safety and Health regulations.
  • Experience in building and sustaining programs for compliance.
  • Knowledge of chemical and biological safety practices.
  • An in-depth knowledge of regulatory and legal requirements for waste management is required.
  • Strong understanding of all EHS requirements as appropriate to the facility.
  • Ability to gain a detailed knowledge of all BI Corporate requirements.
  • Occasionally will be required to work in a physically demanding environment, including conducting field work and participating in emergency response activities. Must have the ability to lift 35 lbs.
  • Position may require periodic off-shift work to meet the needs of internal customers.
  • Occasional travel is required.
