University Intern - Real World Evidence (RWE)

This is a 12-month paid internship starting September 2026. The role is head office based requiring a minimum of 2 days a week to be worked from our office in Winnersh.

 

Salary: £26,000 per annum

POSITION

This role focusses on Real World Evidence (RWE). RWE is the study of patient data gathered in real world settings, such as during regular healthcare visits and at home. We use data sources like electronic health records and wearable technology to understand how well medicines work in real-life situations, not just in clinical trials.

TASKS & RESPONSIBILITIES

Support protocol and study design development

  • Assist in drafting or reviewing components of RWE study protocols, including objectives, endpoints, data sources, and methodology sections, under the guidance of study leads.

 

Deep research into Innovative RWE topics

  • Conduct structured research into cutting-edge RWE topics, including artificial intelligence applications, regulatory and HTA acceptance of RWE, wearable technologies, and tracking global evidence trends.
  • Summarise findings and present insights in an impactful way internal stakeholders to inform strategic planning for the RWE group and beyond.

 

Ensuring high-quality RWE through project governance and delivery support

  • Assist the RWE Delivery Lead in managing timelines and milestones across active RWE projects. Coordinate RWE protocol reviews, prepare meeting documentation, and support governance processes to ensure timely and compliant project execution.
  • Assist the RWE Delivery Lead in identifying opportunities for optimisation in RWE processes and proposing potential solutions to accelerate research.

 

Real World Data and evidence landscape exploration

  • Support the identification and assessment of new real-world data sources (e.g. registries, claims databases, digital health platforms) relevant to priority therapy areas. Contribute to internal mapping and evaluation exercises to expand the organisation’s data ecosystem.
  • Support the selection and use of suitable platform for creating an inventory of relevant UKIE real-world data sources for internal use.
  • Support the selection and use of suitable platform for creating an inventory of studies supporting priority therapeutic areas.

 

Technical engagement and event coordination

  • Lead or assist in the planning and delivery of RWE-focused activities such as journal clubs, internal educational events, and technical workshops. Prepare agendas, coordinate logistics, and support content development to promote knowledge sharing and cross-functional engagement.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Applicants will be studying for a Life Sciences degree.
  • 3 A levels at grade ABB (minimum) with at least one grade coming from a STEM or social -science subject.
  • Applicants must have the ability for independent travel to work and other sites.
  • Applicants must have the right to work in the UK.

  • Strong written communication skills, able to write clearly, succinctly and correctly, writes convincingly in an engaging, structured and logical manner, avoiding unnecessary use of jargon or complicated language.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office essential with the ability to adapt knowledge to use Boehringer’s local systems/platforms/technology.
  • Sets clear objectives, plans activities well in advance, manages time effectively, identifying and organising resources needed to accomplish tasks, monitoring performance against deadlines.
  • Able to work as team member, establishing good working relationships, adapting to the team as required; also, able to work as an individual contributor with minimal supervision. Must be highly motivated and have the ability to deliver both within a team environment and independently.

FUNCTIONAL COMPENTENCIES

  • Data literacy and familiarity with organisational tools (Excel, Word, Teams, Outlook, PowerPoint etc).
  • Understanding of the ABPI/IPHA Codes – training provided.
  • Basic awareness of data privacy (GDPR/PECR) and AI regulation – training provided.
  • Comfortable with Microsoft 365; intermediate Excel essential; Excellent PowerPoint skills.
