The Position

Boehringer Ingelheim (BI) is seeking a talented and experienced Senior or Principal Scientist in Human Genetics. This position is critical for advancing genomics-driven drug discovery across multiple disease areas, including cardio-renal-metabolic diseases, immunological diseases, cancer immunology and more.

The ideal candidate will possess deep expertise in standard genetic analyses and extensive experience analyzing biobank-scale datasets, while contributing to strategic objectives and developing advanced genomic tools. This encompasses identifying first-in-class novel therapeutic concepts (NTCs), elucidating mechanisms of action (MoA), developing translational biomarkers, and contributing to patient segmentation for proof of clinical principle (PoCP) studies.

You have demonstrated success in implementing innovative research approaches within an industrial setting and you bring substantial experience in characterizing gene function through meta-analysis of multidimensional datasets, including GWAS, QTLs, and omics data, while effectively utilizing diverse knowledge bases.

Tasks & responsibilities

  • In your new role you will lead genomic-driven target and biomarker identification across Boehringer’s disease areas using cutting-edge methodologies and large-scale biobank datasets such as UK Biobank, FinnGen, and others.
  • With your expertise you will develop and implement innovative approaches to discovery and in silico validate targets and biomarkers using biobank and clinical cohort data.
  • You will utilise computational methods to characterize gene function in disease-specific cell types and relevant disease subtypes.
  • Moreover, you will generate high-quality therapeutic hypotheses through rigorous analysis and translate findings in collaboration with therapeutic areas.
  • You will effectively lead, collaborate, and communicate across internal departments and with external academic and industry partners.
  • You will thrive in a matrix environment, support and lead initiatives while shaping scientific and strategic priorities to accelerate portfolio advancement.

Additional tasks & responsibilities for Principal Scientist

  • As Principal Scientist, you will deliver strong leadership in methodology and translational projects as a project lead or a use case owner in matrix teams.
  • You will excel in strategic initiatives, offer insights and execute tasks at the level of a recognized subject matter expert.
  • As Champion in bringing new methodologies towards translation you will ensure an effective communication and stakeholder management.

Requirements

  • PhD in Statistical Genetics, Bioinformatics, Genetic Epidemiology, Computational Biology, Statistics, Computer Science, or related fields with several years of professional expertise
  • 2 years of post-PhD industry experience in disease translation within a pharmaceutical or biotechnology environment
  • Strong statistical genetics expertise demonstrated through successful disease translation applications and a proven track record of delivering value through human genomics
  • Demonstrated project management expertise in leading cross-functional projects and teams
  • Extensive computing and programming experience with demonstrated proficiency in relevant programming languages
  • Strong collaborator and presenter with proven experience in driving impact within matrix environments

Additional requirements for Principal Scientist

  • 5 years or longer of post-PhD industry experience in disease translation within a pharmaceutical or biotechnology environment
  • As a principle scientist, you have in-depth biological and translational knowledge in one of the disease focus areas of BI
