Senior Data Scientist
The Position
As a Senior Data Scientist in Central Data Science (CDS), you will build prototypes and productive applications using data science / machine learning to generate impact for all units of Boehringer Ingelheim. In addition, you will contribute to overarching initiatives such as building foundation models, monitoring AI domains, or academic collaboration with leading AI researchers. Ultimately, your work contributes to delivering medicines more efficiently to humans and animals.
This position can be filled in Ingelheim or Biberach.

Tasks & responsibilities
- You will build advanced data science and machine learning prototypes to validate new use‑cases in close collaboration with business stakeholders, rapidly testing what is feasible and valuable.
- Moreover, you will support building production‑grade data science solutions within cross‑functional product teams, ensuring high technical quality and measurable business impact.
- Publishing impactful applied AI research in pharma, establishing scientific credibility, fostering trust, and promoting a culture of excellence will also be one of your responsibilities.
- You will contribute to overarching initiatives, such AI strategy, monitoring key AI domains, business liaisons, internal IT platforms teams (e.g., MLOps, or LLM platform), or academic collaborations.
Requirements
- Master's degree in data science, mathematics, physics, computer science, or similar. Advanced scientific degrees are desirable, e.g. PhD.
- Several years of relevant working experience with Python programming and common ML libraries, e. g., scikit-learn, pytorch, tensorflow
- Experience with software development and deploying models with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Databricks)
- Expertise in business domains relevant for the pharmaceutical industry (e.g. Chemistry, (Molecular-) Biology, Pharmacology, Medicine-/Bioinformatics)
- AI research experience at university or in industry labs with a strong track record of peer-reviewed publications and a good knowledge of new AI developments (e.g., Transformers, CNNs, LLMs, GNNs, Diffusion models, JEPA, NeurIPS, ICLR, ICML; alternative: highly used / cited AI publications)
- Experience in methods to build foundation models for text, vision, or molecules, including Model-architectures, Training methods large-scale pipelines and methods for evaluation would be an advantage
- Excellent technical leadership and communication skills to conduct multi-team cross-function collaborations
- Business fluent English skills (oral and written)
