Head of Computational Biology - Neuroscience & Mental Health

The Position
As part of our growing Computational Innovation function, we are looking for a candidate to lead the computational biology efforts to advance new therapeutic concepts (NTCs), biomarker discovery, and patient stratification through rigorous, big data analysis. Utilize cutting-edge bioinformatics and machine learning approaches to extract meaningful insights from multi-omics human data, enhancing precision medicine strategies. Collaborate with cross-functional teams and external partners to integrate computational methodologies into drug discovery, ensuring innovative and impactful solutions for the neuroscience and mental health portfolio. This position has a hybrid setup with approximately 2-3 days per week on site.

Tasks & responsibilities

  • In your new role, you will drive innovation as the primary computational partner for the Neuroscience & Mental Health Therapeutic Area, collaborating with leaders across Discovery Research, Translational Medicine, and Clinical Pharmacology to deliver impactful solutions.
  • Furthermore, you will lead computational strategies to support therapeutic innovation, biomarker discovery, and patient stratification, applying advanced bioinformatics and machine learning to multi-omics datasets, including genomics and single-cell transcriptomics/proteomics, to inform decision-making across the drug discovery continuum.
  • In addition, you will represent Neuroscience & Mental Health within the global Computational Innovation leadership team, ensuring alignment with broader organizational goals and scientific priorities.
  • You will lead and mentor a diverse team of computational biologists (ranging from early-career scientists to associate directors and domain experts) and fostering collaboration, growth, and scientific excellence, with focus on a high-performing culture and continuous development.
  • Moreover, you will oversee resource allocation and team development, with a strong emphasis on scaling capabilities and nurturing talent. Drive recruitment, onboarding, training, and career development initiatives.
  • Finally, you will cultivate and expand internal and external collaborations, including academic partnerships and contract research organizations, to address portfolio needs and close strategic gaps in data and method.

Requirements

  • PhD or equivalent postdoctoral experience in Neuroscience (with strong computational expertise), Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, or a related discipline
  • Several years of experience in the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry, including start-ups or in a senior academic/research leadership role within a center of excellence
  • Deep knowledge and hands-on experience in computational biology, including the integration and analysis of clinical and multi-omics data
  • Strong track record of leading and developing high-performing teams, including experience in managing senior scientists and team leaders
  • Demonstrated expertise in Neuroscience and Mental Health, with a strong foundation in research or clinical informatics being a significant advantage
  • Proven ability to lead and develop high-performing teams, manage senior scientists, and work across international and interdisciplinary teams
