The Senior Scientist of Protein Purification serves as the chromatography and protein purification expert responsible for developing, industrializing, and supporting the lifecycle management of purification methods for a variety of vaccine and protein modalities. The role provides scientific leadership on new technologies, collaborates closely with research, upstream development, analytical teams, and global supply partners, and supports method transfer and troubleshooting across the organization. The position independently delivers scientific and technical project work, leads or contributes to cross‑functional initiatives, and plays a critical role in advancing priority programs within Global Innovation.

Duties & Responsibilities

Acts as the scientific expert for chromatography and protein purification development supporting downstream processes

  • Provides scientific and technical guidance for process development teams.

  • Analyzes complex process and product data at a high level and prepares autonomous reports to support decision‑making.

  • Provides scientific leadership for troubleshooting, root‑cause analysis, process development, scale‑up, industrialization, validation, and analytical testing.

  • Provides scientific and technical leadership for questions received from Regulatory Authorities.

 

Provides guidance and influences decisions on new protein purification technologies to support future chromatography needs

  • Leads scientific exploration of existing BIAH technologies to guide Technology Standards.

  • Recommends and advocates, as the expert voice, for new chromatography technologies for potential use in existing or new manufacturing processes, including opportunities for cost reduction.

  • Recommends and advocates for future‑oriented chromatography platforms that align with long‑term strategy.

 

Leads development, maintenance, and advancement of chromatography scientific expertise within BIAH

  • Continually develops and maintains theoretical and practical expertise to meet organizational needs.

  • Leads exchange of Technology expertise across global development teams in Global Innovation and Global Supply.

  • Participates as an active and influential member of external industry working groups representing BIAH.

 

Executes independent technical deliverables and cross‑functional projects

  • Represents Global Innovation as Lead of the CMC Development sub‑team and serves as chromatography expert connecting to Global Supply teams.

  • Provides scientific and technical guidance for user requirements, product or process changes.

  • Develops, structures, and leads cross‑functional projects and programs aligned with project‑management methodology.

  • Proposes and manages scope, budget, schedule, and risks to deliver fully functional project outcomes that meet customer requirements.

  • Ensures compliance with regulatory requirements and internal/external standards, including EHS, VICH, Corporate procedures, and GxP.

  • Establishes and maintains communication tools (e.g., project charters, monthly reports) to ensure effective communication with stakeholders.

Requirements

  • PhD in Pharmacy, Chemistry, Biochemistry, or Biological Sciences with at least 5 years of industry experience; OR
  • Master’s degree with at least 10 years; OR
  • Bachelor’s degree with at least 14 years.
  • Experience must include a minimum of 3 years of leading, influencing, and developing people across the organization.
  • Additional qualification in Business (e.g., Supply Chain, Economics) preferred.
  • Professional certification in a scientific field or project management preferred.
  • Expertise in novel technologies or emerging scientific areas is an advantage.
  • Technical and practical knowledge of chromatography for biologic products.
  • Demonstrated technical leadership, influence, and people development capability.
  • Fluency in English required; additional languages are an asset.
  • Willingness to travel >10% domestically and internationally annually.
  • Leadership experience troubleshooting commercial purification processes.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to engage diverse audiences across organizational levels.
  • Proven depth of knowledge and leadership in chromatography or related scientific disciplines.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor experts and influence peers.

 

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without restriction.
  • Must be willing to take a drug test and post-offer physical (if required).
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
