Post Doctoral - Bacterial Pathogenesis

The Postdoctoral Scientist will be responsible for expanding the understanding of bacterial pathogenesis and protein secretion mechanisms, thus contributing to the discovery and the development of novel entities to control and prevent infectious diseases in animals. They will be responsible for the design, interpretation, and presentation of experiments that utilize cutting-edge approaches and/or technologies as well as for performing studies that follow established protocols.


The incumbent will be a part of a highly innovative, collaborative, and expanding team of experienced microbiologists and biochemists in the Bacterial Diseases group. The Bacterial Pathogenesis team will provide strong mentorship and professional development opportunities. An individualized mentoring plan will be developed, and projects will be refined to maximize the benefits both to the Postdoctoral Scientist and to the BI Bacterial Diseases Group’s portfolio.


This position is limited to 2 years, with the option of a one-year extension.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Take full responsibility for a research project, using guidance from experienced mentors with an extensive background in academia and industry
  • Design, execute, and interpret experiments focused on microbial growth, physiology, and vaccinology with minimal supervision
  • Independently apply basic scientific principles and perform literature searches to address pertinent questions related to research projects
  • Report and treat data with a high level of integrity and ethics
  • Ensure laboratory facilities and equipment are well maintained
  • Comply with applicable regulations, perform all work in a safe manner
  • Maintain proper records in accordance with SOPs and policies
  • Effectively communicate and defend research work, orally and in writing
  • Collaborate closely with members of the Bacterial Pathogenesis and Bacterial Immunology team, and potentially with other experts across BI’s global research organization

Requirements

  • Ph.D. or DVM-Ph.D. from an accredited institution in Microbiology, Biochemistry, or a closely related field, with a strong publication record
  • Experience in molecular microbiology or protein biochemistry is essential
  • Hands-on experience with spirochete microbiology and/or bacterial outer membrane vesicles is preferred
  • Experience with Western Blotting, protein purification, and/or flow cytometry is preferred
  • Ability to build and test a scientifically robust hypothesis, create written scientific reports and protocols, and strong verbal communication skills
  • Ability to function in multi-disciplinary teams
  • Ability to clearly articulate scientific concepts and implications of data across functions
  • High motivation, dependability, and organization skills

 

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without restriction.
  • Must be willing to take a drug test and post-offer physical (if required).
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
