Director, BD&L (China for China)
Role & Responsibility:
- Optimize Boehringer China's long-term profitable growth by establishing external partnerships aligned with HP strategy
- Identify and develop external licensing and partnerships opportunities with cross-functional collaboration from TA, X-TA Strategy, MED, Cannel Solution, FIN, HAMA, Compliance & Legal
- Lead cross-functional project teams to contract execution & transition completion for external partnerships projects, incl. license-in/out and commercial partnerships following BI external partnerships procedures
- Develop and continuously optimize the external partnerships process, including opportunity intake, evaluation criteria, governance mechanism, decision-making workflow and post-deal transition approach, to ensure consistency, efficiency and strategic alignment.
• Define clear process steps, roles and responsibilities across the partnership lifecycle.
• Set up standardized templates, evaluation tools and governance forums to support effective decision-making.
• Regularly review process effectiveness and identify improvement opportunities based on business needs and project feedback.
- Identify, screen and develop business opportunities in line with HP Strategy, therapeutic area priorities and China business needs, including potential licensing, collaboration, co-development, commercialization and other strategic partnership models.
• Conduct market landscaping, competitor monitoring and industry trend analysis to identify potential opportunity areas.
• Screen and prioritize targets based on strategic fit, scientific value, commercial potential, differentiation and feasibility.
• Prepare initial opportunity assessments and recommendations for internal discussion and leadership review.
- Lead cross-functional external partnership projects end-to-end, including opportunity search and assessment, strategic fit analysis, financial modeling and valuation, value proposition development, deal structure design, due diligence coordination, negotiation support, contract execution and smooth handover to relevant business owners after deal closure.
• Coordinate cross-functional due diligence workstreams and ensure timely input from relevant subject matter experts.
• Develop project plans, track key milestones, identify risks and drive issue resolution throughout the project lifecycle.
• Support business case development, deal discussion, negotiation preparation and internal approval processes.
- Build and maintain a strong external network with potential partners, industry associations, innovation platforms, investment communities, consulting firms and other external partnership-related stakeholders to proactively capture market trends and collaboration opportunities.
• Establish regular engagement channels with potential partners and ecosystem stakeholders.
• Represent the organization in selected industry events, partnering discussions and external forums as appropriate.
• Maintain ongoing relationship mapping and follow-up plans to support long-term partnership development.
- Manage external suppliers and service providers, including identifying, evaluating, selecting, onboarding, monitoring and maintaining consulting firms, market research agencies and other vendors to ensure quality delivery, compliance requirements and cost effectiveness.
• Define project briefs, scope of work, deliverables, timelines and quality expectations for external vendors.
• Coordinate vendor selection, contracting, purchase order and compliance-related processes in collaboration with relevant internal functions.
• Monitor vendor performance, review outputs and ensure deliverables are actionable, business-relevant and completed on time.
- Establish, maintain and regularly update the external partnership database, including target companies, assets, technologies, partnership status, key contacts, assessment outcomes and follow-up actions, to support pipeline tracking and management decision-making.
• Collect and structure information from market research, external meetings, internal discussions and project assessments.
• Track opportunity status, key milestones, ownership, next steps and decision records in a consistent format.
• Generate regular pipeline updates, summary reports and management dashboards to support prioritization and follow-up.
- Build effective cross-functional collaboration with TA,X-TA Strategy, Medicine, Finance, Legal, Compliance, HR, Corporate Affairs, Commercial Support, HAMA, TCM Leadership Team and other corporate functions to ensure alignment, timely input and high-quality execution of partnership projects.
• Facilitate regular communication and alignment meetings with internal stakeholders throughout the partnership process.
• Translate business needs into clear project requirements and ensure functional inputs are integrated into project deliverables.
• Escalate key risks, decisions and resource needs in a timely manner to support effective governance and execution.
Requirements:
Minimum 10 years of related experience in a pharmaceutical company in Business Development, Marketing, or a business consultancy
Experienced in long-term strategic business planning and analysis
Strong selling, negotiation, collaboration, and project management skills
Deep knowledge of the Chinese market and customers
High resiliency, agility, and intrapreneurship
