The position ensures critical sequencing, data analysis and protein design support are provided to the different functions within Global Innovation enabling new target discovery and design of first class vaccines and biologics. The incumbent leads a global interdisciplinary team of bioinformaticians and scientists with diverse skill sets including next generation sequencing, OMICs analysis, phylogenetic analysis as well as protein and antibody design. The position is responsible to ensure that the Bioinformatics team efficiently manages interfaces with multiple teams within Global Innovation, delivering essential work packages in accordance with agreed upon priorities and timelines. Furthermore, this leadership role manages connections within Human Pharma and Information Technology as well as identifies and implements new methodologies and technologies that enhance the efficiency and bioinformatic capabilities of the team. Finally, the incumbent keeps current with relevant scientific literature and upholds and reinforces governance and processes in the context of the projects where the members of the Bioinformatics team are located.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Provide leadership, strategic direction, development opportunities, and mentorship to a team of bioinformaticians and scientists working on Bioinformatics. Provide clear direction and role clarity in this complex environment. Promote, inspire, and support a culture of scientific inquiry and discovery and build a learning culture that delivers scientific excellence.
- Responsible for ensuring that the Bioinformatics team maintains and builds on institutional knowledge of competitive developments in the field of bioinformatics. Provides expertise for the evaluation of new and emerging technologies and methodologies that may be applied to enhance the efficiency and bioinformatic capabilities of the team with the ultimate goal to fill and rapidly progress Boehringer Ingelheim's Animal Health pipeline
- Prepares and supports preparation of clear technical
reports, publications and oral presentations.
Independently communicates results in the form of
reports and/or presentations. Presents responsibly and defends own work at meetings. May deliver updates to senior-level management in context of overall project goals. Contributes and presents project related topics within designated Global Innovation forums. - Manages the drafting and execution of contracts with
external academic and research institute partners,
working closely with Legal and Intellectual Property. Leads IP development and long term value of BI assets. - Be a trusted, collaborative partner, with key experts
internally (AH and HP) and externally (universities,
CRO, governmental institutes. Build a global network of KOLs, experts and collaborators to ensure that BI has access to leading expertise in bioinformatics
Ensure that BI is the preferred partner for new
technologies and methodologies in the field. Facilitates a collaborative environment for identification, evaluation and progression of strategic opportunities in the field of bioinformatics. - Prepare and manage annual budget, internal and external resources to deliver the best return on investment to the business, in line with agreed milestones and timelines. Ensure optimal allocation of people and money to projects
- Using project management skills, ensure collaboration with other Global Innovation functions to enable smooth transitions through the research and development process.
Requirements
- Veterinary Degree/University Degree in Biological science + PhD in molecular biology with specific emphasis on bioinformatics.With 10 year’s experience in research, or industrial veterinary medicine, but specifically in bioinformatics. Incumbent has a deep knowledge of emerging technologies in the field of bioinformatics
- In-depth understanding of the sciences of molecular biology, genetics and bioinformatics. Understanding of animal diseases and their impact.
- A proven record of applied research as evidenced by publications and patents. Strong understanding of next generation sequencing, virus discovery, adventitious agent detection as well as genomics and transcriptomics of bacteria, viruses and eukaryotic cells.
- Strong understanding of adjacent fields of protein characterization, structural biology, proteomics, and the ability to translate this knowledge into applications which result in viable vaccine and therapeutic candidates.
- An outstanding ability to communicate with and motivate scientists and academics and embrace new technologies, while focusing the team on key project deliverables.
- Strong Interpersonal skills are prerequisite to lead the team.
- Strong negotiation, communication and influencing skills are essential to ensure effective performance and collaboration, internally and externally.
- The combination of education and experience must demonstrate a scientific orientation, strong business and financial acumen and the ability to think and act strategically.
- A willingness to travel internationally: at least two - four times a year. Ability to partner simultaneously with internal scientific colleagues and external consultants/experts as needed.
